Tech EDGE: Mobile Learning in the Classroom Podcasts

Tech EDGE is a program out of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's college of education and human sciences. Their mission is to create a generation of teachers who are effective and confident using new technologies to prepare the students of Nebraska to participate and lead in tomorrow’s global society. The goals of UNL's Tech EDGE are:
  1. To create a partnership between Nebraska school districts and Nebraska teacher education programs to improve student learning by informing teacher preparation students, university methods professors, and practicing teachers on effective use of new literacies and 21st century technologies in the classroom.
  2. To establish a blueprint for effective integration of technology into teaching and learning to empower students to meet educational standards and global challenges.
  3. To infuse current best practices and research to existing teachers as well as teacher preparation programs to improve student learning.
They provide a weekly video podcast on YouTube and iTunes U about iPads in K-12 classrooms. I found their YouTube channel to be extremely easy to navigate. Before even watching the video, one can tell what the episode is about by simply looking at the at the picture next to the episode name. All of the videos are also in order of which they were aired. The Tech EDGE episodes discuss many topics and provide explanation of useful apps to use in the classroom. I think Tech EDGE is a wonderful resource for teachers. Below is a review for three different apps discussed in Tech EDGE episodes:

Canvas
Canvas is a learning management system. A learning management system is a software application for administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and delivery of electronic educational technology  courses. It is free to download and use! It is available on all devices, such as a desktop, tablet, or smart phone, and has the same exact features on every device for a user friendly app. Canvas is a great, easy to use app for both teachers and students. I would recommend Canvas for secondary and higher education due to the unique multiple class feature. I believe that teachers should use Canvas in their classroom to create a more organized atmosphere. Students would have easy access to Canvas and be able to turn assignments in, view their gradebook, look at their calendar, and much, much more! All in all, Canvas is a great app and I will be using it in my future classroom!

Nearpod
Nearpod is an interactive presentation app. Though it is free to download and use, there are options to upgrade and unlock other features. It is not necessary to upgrade, because the free version is still very useable in the classroom. Nearpod helps engage students with interactive lessons by combining slides, multimedia content, and assessment tools. Teachers of all grade levels are able to use Nearpod to share engaging and interactive content with students, instantly collect and share students comprehension, and check knowledge on the spot. Teachers are able to use Nearpod to be creative and control the pace of the class. Nearpod is a very useful app in the classroom that can benefit both students and teachers. It is easy to use and also provides a demonstration and guide upon download. I believe Nearpod would be useful in the classroom to make sure that students are understanding the material. I will definitely use Nearpod instead of a boring presentation in my future classroom.

Evernote
Evernote is a note taking app available for students and teachers. The app is free to download and use! Evernote is available on any platform and any device. It is particularly useful in those classrooms that strictly uses technology. I would recommend Evernote for secondary classrooms due to the substantial amount of note taking that happens at the secondary level. Evernote allows the user to change the font, font size, font color, use the handwriting feature, and take a picture and import it into the notes. One of my favorite features on Evernote is the sharing. It allows students to share their notes with each other or the teacher to share their notes with the students. Students are also able to group chat within the notes, which may be distracting, or could be helpful if someone is confused. I think Evernote is especially helpful to students in the classroom. I would recommend this app to my students so they can stay organized with their course work.
