The Catalyst
I have been in the College of Education for three years now at Kansas State University, and I have never been to the Catalyst. The Catalyst is located on the ground floor of Bluemont Hall. It provides technology support, digital media, copying, network and instructional services, as well as instructional materials and technology equipment for faculty, staff, and students in the College of Education.
While exploring the Catalyst, my friend Amy and I found a Native American puzzle. Puzzles are very useful in education. Puzzles promote team work, gross motor skills, and cognitive development. This particular puzzle could enhance knowledge on Native Americans by learning where they lived, what kind of animals were around, types of food, clothing, etc.
We decided to build this puzzle. It was a 300 piece puzzle. This was the biggest challenge. It took us an hour and a half to complete. We learned that puzzles can be very difficult and frustrating. It would have been very easy to give up, but we kept going. During this process we learned to be patient. Once we completed it, we found relief and had a sense of pride.
Tutorials are very hard to make. If someone is making a tutorial, it is usually over something they are very familiar or comfortable with, so it is easy to breeze through it or skip instructions. Patience and time is needed when creating a tutorial.
To make this project, we used iMovie. iMovie was very useful because we were able to incorporate different video segments and pictures. On iMovie, sounds and special effects are also available. Using iMovie was very easy. In a classroom, iMovie can be used by the teacher to give instructions. These videos could be posted on their websites for students to access when away from the classroom. Students can also use iMovie to create projects. I believe students would have a lot of fun creating iMovies, because I now I did!
